Tourism campaign “Visit Latvian Castles, Palaces and Manors”
In the anticipation of the centennial celebration of Latvia, the Association of Latvian Castles, Palaces and Manors has re-launched its tourism campaign called “Visit Latvian Castles, Palaces and Manors”, which will take place from 1 May to 28 October 2017 when the popular Night of Legends is organised. During the campaign, tourists are welcome to visit 69 castles, palaces and manors in order to learn about their role in economy and creative life, as well as their importance in establishing the statehood of Latvia.
This year, the campaign is the main activity within the “Learn about Castles, Palaces, and Manors – Guardians of the Baltic Heritage” project, whereas in 2018, when our neighbouring states Estonia and Lithuania will also celebrate their centennial, the travel campaign will be organised in all the Baltic states in cooperation with the Estonian and Lithuanian associations of castles, palaces and manors. In the past, manors used to be economic units and even large households with thousands of hectares of land where production, cultivation, processing, and brewing took place. They were excellent examples of architecture and landscape, hubs of culture and art which stored and guarded valuable art collections, brought together creative personalities from all around Europe and along with the sophisticated life of lords shaped the social life in local communities.
However, their prosperity ended along with the Revolution of 1905, which was followed by the World War I, agrarian reform in 1920s, World War II, and finally the Soviet occupation. All these changes resulted in large, in some cases even irreparable losses.
The regaining of independence sparked a revival of castles, palaces and manors. Today, many of them are popular tourist attractions and they often perform important public functions by serving as places where events are organised and various free and payable services are provided. Castles, palaces and manors are now used as educational institutions, museums, hotels, restaurants, concert halls, wellness centres, artists’ residences, libraries, art galleries, culture and tourism information centres, etc.
Today’s tourists seek for interaction with the unique local environment, individual features of every place they visit; they look not for staged but true, genuine, and sincere hospitality.
What makes Latvia’s castles, palaces and manors different is mainly their environment in its broadest sense; they are centuries-old majestic buildings with historic interiors, surroundings with landscape parks and gardens, and other buildings of manor complexes. They have restaurants which often serve exquisite meals made using old manor recipes. With majestic silence and tranquillity far from everyday rush and urban noises, they emanate a romantic and slightly melancholic beauty in which you want to dive in and stay as long as possible.
The campaign includes both established and well-known castles, palaces, and manors and objects which have only recently been opened for visitors and not yet widely known; in total, 69 members of the Association take part in this campaign.
Many of these castles, palaces, and manors have prepared a special offer or task for tourists to earn their badges or stickers for visiting the site; other objects take part in this campaign by organising special events, like concerts, master classes, or exhibitions. While planning their holiday travel route, travellers can purchase and use the map Latvijas pilis un muižas (Castles, Palaces and Manors of Latvia) issued by the map publisher SIA Karšu izdevniecība Jāņa sēta. This map gives particular attention to the objects participating in this campaign and includes a description of each object and a traveller’s map.
According to the rules of the campaign, in order to became its member, one has to receive the traveller’s map and start travelling. The map can be downloaded from the Association’s website (http://www.pilis.lv/lv/projekti?open=p_sec_1#p_sec_1) which the traveller can print out, or it is also available at every castle, palace and manor which participates in this campaign. The travellers who will have visited at least 5 of the 69 castles, palaces and manors and received respective marks on their maps, will participate in the lottery for prizes from the castles, palaces and manors, whereas the most active 50 travellers will get invitations to the ball in Jaunpils castle which will take place on 25 November 2017. After visiting any of the castles, palaces and manors participating in the campaign with the traveller’s map, the visitor must obtain a respective mark in the map. The mark in a form of a badge or sticker is given to the traveller who has paid the entrance fee and/or explored the castle, palace, or manor. To take part in the lottery and/or receive an invitation to the ball in Jaunpils castle, the map with at least 5 (five) marks must be submitted at any of the participating castles, palaces, or manors by 28 October 2017 (including), or sent via mail to the Association of Latvian Castles, Palaces and Manors by 3 November 2017 (on postmark). Each traveller can submit only one map. Before travelling, we recommend to carefully read about all the attractions of each castle, palace and manor and their opening hours, especially during the summer season when the objects might be closed during holidays and weekends due to private events.
The 70th “object” is the partner of the campaign SIA VIRŠI-A. The travellers which will refuel their vehicles at any VIRŠI-A gas station for EUR 20 and obtain respective marks on their maps, will have an opportunity to win fuel gift cards for EUR 50.
To make planning easier, campaign participants have access to an interactive map of castles, palaces and manors available here: http://maps.kartes.lv/clients/simplymap/?lpma, which will provide information on a specific castle, palace, or manor.
For additional information, the travellers can send an e-mail to: firstname.lastname@example.org.
The campaign is supported by the State Culture Capital Foundation, the Investment and Development Agency of Latvia, SIA VIRŠI-A, and Turismagids.lv.
The campaign of 2017 is mainly targeted towards local tourists.
With this campaign, the Association has played a historical and significant role in the local tourism development in Latvia. With its “Travel around Latvian castles and palaces!” campaign, the Association already from its commencement (2000) worked for eleven years towards reviving the “Travel around your Homeland!” campaign, which was popular during the first period of independent Republic of Latvia. From this campaign, various tourism promotion campaigns at regional, national and even Baltic level grew and continued over the following years. Now, after seven years the formerly popular campaign has been renewed.
