Jaunpils Castle - Museum

    Irregulary planned fortified Jaunpils medieval castle with inner-yard was built at the end of the 14th century. From the three sides it is bordered by mill pond. Originally there were two wooden buildings with wooden walkway by the yard facade. Eastern outbuilding was added at the end of the 15th century. At the time, when fire-weapons developed there was built the circular tower and done great repairation of interior in the beginning of the 16th century. Castle was hardly damaged at the time of Swedish offensive in 1625. There was build the third floor and old fortress was adopted for household and inhabiting needs and conveniences at the end of the 17th century. The tower was and the new walkway with entrance stairs was walled at the same time. Rebuilding of roofs and the additional outbuilding at the gates as well as building of the little gallery at the upper part of circular tower were made in the 18th century. Castle burned in fire of 1905 and a year later it was reconstructed by the project of architect W.Bokslaff. After the agrarian reform of 1920 the castle complex housed cattle-breeding experimental station. The Great Hall, stairs were reconstructed in 60ies of the 20th century and the new interior finish took place there. Now there can be viewed interior of 1960s and noticeable 16th century marble stone-carved relief in the Great Hall. Reconstructed room of famous Livonian poetess Elisa von der Recke also can be seen. Two 17th century cannons are placed at the castle entrance. Wide household complex was created at the castle in the 19th century. The stockyard, stables, granary, barns and cart-house were built in close vicinity. The garden with the fruit-houses was created opposite the castle. The mill was built at the pond and behind it the large landscape park was created.
